1700 mobile app submissions from over 60 countries... ONLY 6 deserving finalists...

Team Winnovators, a team of five girls from the 2020-21 Grade 12 batch of the Indian High School, Dubai, has entered the final round of Technovation Challenge, an app-development contest. The team will pitch their idea live at the Technovation World Summit during August 12-13, competing with five other finalist teams from US, Spain, Kenya and Brazil for the coveted Grand Prize in the Senior category.

Technovation, a nonprofit organization based in US, is a global challenge that empowers young women (ages 10-18) to become tech entrepreneurs and leaders. Girls across the globe work in teams to code mobile apps that address real-world problems.

Team Winnovators comprising Anupama Asokan Nair (12 Sc A), Anuradha Asokan Nair (12 Sc A), Geethika Radhakrishnan (12 Sc A), Sakshi Roy (12 Sc B) and Sonali Palit (12 Sc B) created an app ‘EChO’ which has been shortlisted as one of the six finalists in Senior Division from 1,700 mobile app submissions to solve community problems from over 60 countries. Each member of the finalist team is also entitled to a $500 USD educational stipend.

EChO is a free app that connects conservationists and environmentalists to a common forum through social media. Coded on MIT App Inventor, users can post/accept new challenges to improve environmental health. They can upload images of their challenges to earn points, which will allow top scorers to lead a community event of their choice. The app resolves the dearth of knowledge, opportunities, and resources that enable people from taking responsible action to save our planet. Through recycling and the upcycling of items, EChO aims to motivate its users to do more with less. ‘Echo’ symbolizes how the young environmentalists of today become tomorrow’s voices to combat global issues. The letters E, C, O have been capitalized to stand for ecology.

These students have also enthusiastically taken part in the previous two seasons of the Technovation Challenge. The app ‘Trackatoo’ developed by Anupama & Anuradha advanced into the semifinalist round of the 2019 season. Trackatoo was built to reunite lost pets with their owners using photo and location sharing tools. ‘EChO’ also made it into the 2020 semifinals.
